Start with the problem you are solving
Every protector keeps a mattress cleaner, but each type is tuned for a different job. Pick the one that matches your household rather than the thickest or the cheapest, and it will serve you well for years.
Quilted — soft, everyday protection
A lightly padded microfibre face over a breathable backing. It adds a faint cushioned feel, absorbs everyday moisture and keeps dust out, and it is the easiest choice for adults without a specific worry. It is not waterproof, so a full glass of water will eventually find its way through.
Best for: everyday use, spare rooms, and anyone who wants a slightly softer surface.
Waterproof — spill defence
A soft terry towelling or microfibre face bonded to a thin breathable membrane. Liquid sits on the surface and wipes away rather than soaking into the filling. Look for a noiseless, non-crinkle membrane so it does not rustle when you move.
Best for: young children, potty training, illness, pets, and breakfast in bed.
Bed bug — full encasement
Rather than fitting like a sheet, this zips right around the mattress on all six sides. Nothing can get in, and nothing already inside can get out. The very tight weave also gives the most thorough dust-mite barrier available.
Best for: known infestations, second-hand mattresses, and severe allergy sufferers.
Then check the fit
- Bed size — match your UK size exactly rather than sizing up.
- Skirt depth — measure your mattress height, including any topper the protector goes over. An extra deep skirt of roughly 30–40 cm suits most modern mattresses.
- Elastic — all-round elastic grips far better than corner elastic alone.
And read the care label
Choose something machine washable at 40°C and safe to tumble dry on low, so freshening it up is no more effort than washing your sheets. Skip the fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces absorbency over time.
Still unsure?
Quilted for comfort, waterproof for spills, encasement for total peace of mind. If more than one applies, buy for the strictest need — a waterproof protector still feels soft and still keeps dust out.
